Thor’s Well: The Drainpipe of the Pacific

Sunset over rocky ocean waterfall that looks like a well

Located on the rugged Oregon coast near Cape Perpetua, Thor’s Well is a massive, seemingly bottomless sinkhole carved into the rocky shoreline that appears to be continuously draining the Pacific Ocean. It is actually a collapsed sea cave roughly 20 feet deep. At high tide or during winter storms, the ocean waves rush underneath the cave, shoot violently up through the top, and then get sucked rapidly back down the hole in a mesmerizing, hypnotic display. It is incredibly dangerous to stand near the edge, as the powerful suction and unpredictable waves can easily sweep onlookers right into the abyss.
